How difficult is it to understand the basics of SEO?
It’s actually not that difficult – especially if you take advantage of SEO services in Florida.
SEO is a broad topic that has a lot of moving pieces in it. That’s why a lot of business owners are confused by SEO and think that it’s some mystical process that defies explanation. It really isn’t, though, and it helps any business owner to have a good understanding of the basics of how SEO works.
So, here is a quick and concise primer on the basics – the building blocks of what you need to make a site rank well.
Keywords form the building block of good SEO.
If you’ve read this blog before, you know how important they are. Keywords are what people use to search for information. Keywords can be short-tail – i.e. just a word or two – or long-tail, with more words and phrases. Not all keywords are good; you want to find a keyword that is:
- Relevant to your business
- Popular enough that enough people actually search for it
- Not too competitive so that it’s possible to actually rank for it
The last one is important. You don’t want a keyword so competitive that it costs an exorbitant amount of money to eventually rank for it (not unless you have a huge budget.)
You’ll have to play around to find the niche keywords that work the best, but they’re there for the taking.
Once you find keywords, your job is to put them throughout your website. They should appear in headers, sub-headers, on the page itself, and in anchor text (the text that shows up when you have a link on a page).
Shoot for at least 250-500 words of content and stick to one focus keyword per page. Don’t keyword spam and focus first on making your content readable, clear, and helpful. That impacts rankings in a big way.
You’ll also need to do some things in the back end of your website. This means putting meta titles, meta descriptions, focus keywords, and alt tags into place. An alt tag is a tag with a keyword that tells Google what a picture is supposed to represent, since Google can’t “read” pictures. The same goes for videos.

Finally, there are links.
A website is judged by the company it keeps. Google trusts websites that have links coming into them from other reputable, high-quality websites. It’s like word-of-mouth marketing. If your website has a lot of links coming into it from good sites, Google thinks more highly of your site.
You can’t spam links, though (not anymore, at least) and the quality of the other website does matter. There are entire companies that specialize solely in link-building (getting you more links), so it’s something that requires more research and a lot of time and effort. It’s worth it, though.
