Most savvy small business owners understand the importance of having social media pages—but they may not be as aware of how to utilize these pages to their advantage. Remember- your social media presence not only helps define your brand, they can help you interact and connect with potential customers.

Posting content to your pages is good (and it’s certainly something that we hope you’ve been doing), but if you’re not also posting content to the stories section, you’re missing out on valuable opportunities. Below are just a few of the reasons you should be utilizing the stories sections.

They increase your brand’s visibility 

Lots of brands only post 2-3 pieces of static content per week. These posts are often better-produced, more formal, and ideally, they’re evergreen.  When you post in the stories section, however, you can be a lot less formal.  Remember- stories auto-delete after 24-hours so there’s no need to worry about whether what you’re posting today will still be relevant in 2-months.

For example, do you have a sale that’s coming up? Do you have a limited-time offer?  Are you about to launch a new project, product or initiative? If so, the stories section is a great place to preview that to your audience.

They engage your audience

Unlike static posts (which people need to scroll down to see), posts to Instagram’s stories section appear at the top. They can include a CTA, poll questions, and ask viewers if they want to give a thumbs up (or thumbs down) to various ideas.  One gym owner we spoke with said he recently utilized this feature to ask members to give their feedback about some t-shirt designs. Not only did this give his members a way to interact with the gym directly, it boosted his members’ engagement with his brand. “Polling through Instagram was a million times easier than it would have been to poll individual members directly,” he said. “It was cool because when the t-shirts finally arrived, people felt that they contributed to the color scheme and the design. I feel like I should also mention that this was the first time since I opened that a t-shirt order completely sold out.”
