3 Questions You Need to Ask a Digital Marketing Agency Before You Hire Them

If you’re thinking about hiring a digital marketing agency, you may be wondering where to start. There are tons of agencies to choose from- so how can you tell which one is right for you? Below are the top 3 things you should ask an agency before you hire them.

What industries do you work with?

If you own a clothing boutique, you likely want to hire an agency that’s familiar with your business and your target clientele. Suffice to say, you’ll want to know if the agency is experienced in working with companies like yours.

This isn’t to say that agencies can’t be versatile (because they can)– but if the agency has worked with other boutiques in the past, they’ll have data on the results they were able to get for those clients. Conversely- if the agency only works with boutique clothing retailers, this might be a red flag. If this is the case, they may have conflicts of interest (especially if they’re working with your competitors.)

How do your measure success?

Measuring success is about more than helping you with an eye-catching website and a catch social media campaign.  Be sure to ask the agencies you’re interviewing about their track record, and how they quantify the results they’ve gotten for past clients. For example, have they helped company X increase their conversion rate? Have they helped company Y grow their social media followers by a noticeable amount, and has that led to increased sales?

Understanding how the agency measures progress and success is key.

How has SEO evolved in the past 3 years?

If we’ve said it once we’ve said it a million times— SEO best practices are constantly changing. Be sure to ask the person you’re speaking with about how SEO best practices have changed in the past few years (along with the changes that are likely on deck for the future.) Listen closely for red flags on topics that are out of date (such as keyword stuffing and recommendations that include overloading internal links.)

Why? Because both of those practices are outdated (and can lead to an over-optimization penalty).
