Can video content help your SEO ranking?

Lots of business owners wonder if adding video content, either to their website or their social media channels, can help their SEO ranking.

Adding video doesn’t need to be a complex process, but it does require a bit more effort than finding something you like on YouTube, copying the code, and embedding it onto your website.  Video posts should include a bit of strategy. Below are just a few of the ways that well-crafted (and well-planned) videos can help your SEO.

Starting from the top

Do you need to spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on production? No.  Today’s cell phones have phenomenal camera and video equipment–  which means that a colleague, staff member, or even a member of your family might be able to help you record something. Or, there are numerous devices that you can purchase online that can assist you with taking videos of yourself.

Once you figure out how you’re going to film, you need to figure out what (and where) you’re going to film. For example, we’ve recently taken notice of a Southern California-based dog groomer who’s racked up more than a million followers on Instagram.

He films his own videos in-house, and he features before and after photos of his 4-legged clients. The videos are a little bit creative, a little bit fun, and he produces them at a minimal cost. His videos are also cross-posted from Instagram to his other social media channels, including YouTube and TicTok.

Not only are his videos attracting a lot of interest (he’s been interviewed by local and national news stations on several different occasions), they’re helping to drive a ton of organic traffic to his website (which in turn, has helped his SEO ranking.)

Don’t forget meta tags if you cross post to your website

Lastly, if you do decide to cross-post videos you put on your YouTube channel onto your website, don’t forget to add meta tags. Adding meta tags to your videos will help the search engine crawlers understand what the video is about.  The easier it is for the search engines to identify various topics on your website, the better.
