How SEO Impacts Your Website
As a business owner, you’re likely familiar with the term “search engine optimization,” or SEO for short. Ultimately, SEO is the process that helps your website rank well during an online search.
Although some people prefer to boost their website’s visibility via paid advertising, SEO helps drive unpaid, organic traffic.
The tricky thing about SEO, is that the search engine algorithm is constantly changing. For example, things that used to help websites rank well in the past (ie: shoving as many keywords onto a web page as possible), will now ding your ranking.
Yet there are other components of SEO that you also need to be mindful of.
For example, in 2015, Google began to favor websites that are mobile friendly. What does that mean? Well, it means if your website is designed to be viewed on a desktop or laptop computer, but it’s not designed to be viewed on a handheld device, your ranking has likely suffered. Current data shows that more than half of all web traffic is coming from a mobile / handheld device. If users can’t access your website unless they’re sitting in front of a computer, you may be accidentally alienating potential customers.
A second thing that the algorithms considers is whether your website has a user-friendly design. Is it easy to navigate? Does it have blocks of content in odd places? Does your website have more hyperlinks than you can count? Websites that are well-designed rank far better than those that are not- and this all ties into something known as bounce rate.
Bounce rate refers to the amount of time a user spends on a webpage before clicking away. And, not surprisingly, users tend to spend more time viewing websites that are well designed.
If your website is difficult to read because the layout is awkward, or because you’re using orange colored font on a lime green background, you’re not doing yourself any favors. When users click away quickly, the search engine algorithms take notice- and your website’s ranking will suffer.
The bottom line is this- the design of your website can play an enormous role in how well it ranks (or doesn’t rank) in a search engine query. If you have questions about whether your website’s design is helping or hurting your SEO, we can help.
