How to target various users on different social media channels

If you’re interested in advertising on social media but you’re not quite sure where to start, you’re not alone.  Not only do you need to determine which channels to divert your advertising dollars to, you also need to understand the types of users that you want to target.

Start by identifying your audience

Before you develop a campaign that targets your target customer base, you need to identify who these people are. For example, what age group is most likely to buy your product or service? What’s their average annual income level? What types of things do they value?

For example, if you sell a higher-end stroller that can also be used on hiking trails, you may discover that your target demographic is couples in their mid-20s to early 30s, who have a joint household income of more than $150,000 and enjoy spending time in the outdoors.

Whereas targeting these types of individuals would make sense, targeting couples under 25, who live in the city, and have an average combined household income of $80,000, may not net the same results.  Again- you need to know who you’ll be targeting before you start developing your marketing plan.

Review social media channel statistics

Once you know who your audience is, you need to know where to find them.

For example, Facebook has more than 2.23 billion users each month, and statistical data shows that approximately 30% of them are aged 25-34.  Statistical data also show that roughly 37% of Twitter account holders are between the ages of 18-25—which means that younger adults are more apt to be on the platform than people aged 30 and above.   Snapchat, LinkedIn, and YouTube also have varying user demographics. Understanding which platform your target audience is most likely to be on will help understand how to allocate your advertising spend.
