In our last blog post we talked about keyword density, which refers to how often keywords should appear in the copy that appears on your website. Knowing how often keywords should appear is good, but how do you know which ones to use?

If you own a cleaning company, for example, you’ll want to make sure you’re using terms that are relevant to your industry and the part of the country your business is located in. Terms that are searched heavily in Las Vegas, for example, may not be searched as frequently in SWFL.

When you do start to do your research, you’ll want to keep three things in mind. What words or phrases are people looking for, how often is the word searched, and what format are they typing in.

If you’re a florist that’s trying to rank for wedding arrangements, you probably have some ideas of the types of words you want to rank for. Weddings and florist are likely at the top of the list.

The first thing you’ll want to do is to determine which keyword research tool you’ll want to use (there are several you can choose from.)

If you start with “wedding,” you’ll soon find out that the most popular search results include phrases like wedding rings, wedding crashers and weddings on a budget. As you can see, if you’re wanting to rank for wedding floral arrangements, you’ll need to use a more specific keyword phrase, such as “wedding flowers,” or “wedding arrangement.”

The key is to determine which words and phrases are being searched for the most. If the most popular search term in your area is “wedding florist,” that’s what you’ll want to use on your website.

Yes, this can all seem a bit overwhelming, and that’s for good reason. The search engine algorithm is constantly changing, as are the words and phrases that people are searching for. Staying on top of what’s current and what works well can be difficult, especially when you’re trying to run a small business.
