Are Email Marketing Campaigns Worthwhile?

My answer to this question is a resounding YES!

Social media is highly effective at creating conversations that are relevant to your products, services, or cause; however, one of the best ways to move from conversation to commerce is through email marketing campaigns.

Think about it for a minute. When is the last time that you went shopping? More than likely the cashier requested your email address at some point throughout the transaction. Why? So that you can be added to their email list where they will send you everything from information about their products and services to coupons.

Sure, many people will simply delete the emails that you send to them. However, if you create a catchy title and keep the content short, relevant, and appealing (using graphics is incredibly helpful as well), some people will open the email and of those a few will be driven to your website. This is where you capture potential customers.

So let’s say you send an email to 100 people and only 10 go to the desired page on your  website (the landing page) and of those 10 people half of them perform the desired action (buying your product or service, supporting your cause, contacting you for a free consultation). Although five people may seem like a small number, considering how easy it is (and cost-effective) to send emails, that is a pretty great return on your investment.

Below are some tips for increasing the effectiveness of your email marketing campaigns:

  • Build trust. The last thing people want is someone who fills up their inbox with spam—with information they care nothing about OR someone who emails them multiple times a day or week. Therefore, limit the number of emails you send out and make sure they are quality
  • Use a landing page. The goal to tracking the number of people that performs the desired action as a result of your email marketing campaign is to use a special landing page for your efforts. This method will allow you to see the number of people that view this page (which if set up correctly and is only used for your email marketing campaign) , and this makes it easier to track ROI.
  • Keep it short and simple. Do not try to trick users. Instead, keep content short, sweet, and to the point with obvious links.

In conclusion, before you write off email marketing campaigns, utilize this information to help improve your existing campaign or to create a new email marketing campaign and tailor your approach until you get a ROI that works for you and your needs.
