Unveiled way back on April 21, Mobilegeddon was announced by Google with two simple sentences: “Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results.”

Mobilegeddon further revealed that responsive design doesn’t have a ranking benefit for SEO. Mobile-friendliness is also a page-by-page determination, not one made at the site level. Other details emerged both before and after the transition, but the essential bottom line is this: websites have to be mobile-friendly in order to rank well.
That’s a pretty dramatic paradigm shift from just a few years ago. This is the first year in which mobile-friendliness became extremely important, leaving a lot of businesses scurrying to catch up. Even now, seven months after Mobilegeddon, most business websites still aren’t mobile-friendly.
What makes for a mobile-friendly website? Such a website:
- Loads quickly (faster than desktop versions)
- Has a responsive interface that adjusts to the size of the mobile screen
- Contains a viewport meta tag to scale your site on multiple devices
- Features mobile-friendly font size and button sizes
- Uses high-resolution images
The big picture is simple: you have a website that can be easily accessed by mobile users. When they access your site, they need to see a site that is easy to navigate with a mobile phone and allows a user to access everything they need to access.
