Video Clips and SEO: What You Need to Know

Video Clips and SEO: What You Need to Know

Most business owners understand the importance of SEO rankings.  Why is this important? Because if you own a clothing boutique, you want to make sure your website ranks on the first page of Google search results. Most people don’t scroll to page 2 or 3, and if your customers can’t find your website, your website isn’t doing you any favors.

In our last blog post, we talked about three SEO myths and urban legends, that don’t do much to boost a website’s ranking. For this post, we wanted to talk about something that does help. Namely- how adding video to your website can improve your SEO efforts.

Why video is important

As we’ve stated in the past, Google’s algorithm is constantly changing. One of the recent changes, involves giving greater ranking priority to websites that have video content.  Considering websites that rank in the top three spots on the first page of Google search results- get more than 50% of all clicks, adding video is something you’ll want to explore.

Do’s and don’ts of video content

Similar to blog posts- video content should be thought out, have a purpose, and be relevant to your product or service. For example, if you own a hair salon, creating videos about how to decorate a birthday cake- won’t do you any favors.

On the other hand, creating a video that talks about different face shapes, and the different hair cuts / styles that work best for each one– is a much better choice.

When you post the video to your website, be sure to give it some context. Embed it on a page where it makes sense. For example, if you have a blog about the top hair style trends for 2020, embedding the video there would make a lot more sense than if you were to embed it on your pricing page.

Lastly, Google gives favor to videos that are hosted on YouTube. If you want your videos to show up in search results, that’s the platform where you’ll want to store them.
