When you start to compose text for your webpages or blogs, you’ll want to use industry specific keywords, which will help the search engines know what type of business you own. If you own a bakery, for example, sample keywords / keyword phrases may include things like “wedding cakes,” or “bakery in X city.”

Keyword density (sometimes referred to as keyword frequency) refers to how often keywords appear on a webpage, and the goal is to include relevant phrasings in a way that the text reads naturally. As you can imagine, this is an important part of SEO, because keywords are something that search engine algorithms pay attention to.

Less is more

In the early days of SEO, cramming as many keywords onto a webpage as possible (keyword stuffing) helped websites rank well. The problem with this, experts say, is that text would seem forced and unnatural. As time progressed, and the ranking algorithms changed, keyword stuffing did a lot more harm than good. Websites that once ranked on the first page of google were downgraded, and business owners that weren’t quick to have the text rewritten realized their listings weren’t showing up in search results.

What are the new rules?

Experts agree that when it comes to keyword density, there aren’t any hard and fast rules, and a big part of the formula relates to the type of content you’re posting. Syndicated news articles, for example, need far fewer keywords to rank well, whereas small businesses who don’t have a strong enough keyword density may find their websites don’t rank well.

For today, the quick rule of thumb is to include one keyword (or keyword phrase) for every 200 words of text. If you’re composing a 400-word blog post, you’d want to include a target keyword no more than twice.

The challenge is that the search engine crawlers are constantly changing. What worked well yesterday may not work well next year, and in some cases, staying up to date on SEO best practices can feel like a second full time job.
