What Is Responsive Web Design?

Responsive website design has been gaining a lot of traction in recent years.

Simply stated, responsive web design is when a designer creates a website that “reacts” to the type of device it’s being viewed on; the design and display of the site will be altered depending on whether it’s being viewed on a smartphone, tablet or oversized computer monitor.

If you think this isn’t an important feature to consider, you’re wrong. Google gives preference to websites that are optimized for mobile. If yours isn’t easy to view on a handheld device, your website ranking can and will suffer.

How it all began

The move toward mobile-friendly web design began shortly after the iPhone was launched.

At first, developers began by creating separate websites for businesses- one that worked well for desktop and a second that worked well for handhelds. The downsides to this approach were vast. Not only was developing (and maintaining) two separate websites time consuming, it was costly.

Consequently, business owners quickly realized this model was not sustainable.

Several years later, a web designer published an article proposing that web developers start to create websites that would respond based on the type of device it was being viewed on. The rest is history.

Why responsive web design is important?

Data from the Pew Research Center notes that as of 2023, more than 85% of people in the United States own smartphones, and that number is only expected to grow.

When websites aren’t responsive and users try to pull a desktop site up on a handheld device, what they get is the visual equivalent of trying to shove  a square peg through a round hole.

Responsive website design not only provides an optimized browsing experience, it also helps to enhance viewers’ experience.

If your website isn’t optimized for mobile, your mobile search bounce rate is going to be high. You also run the risk of sending your customers directly into the arms of your competitors.
