What Is Search Engine Optimization?

Let’s pretend that you’re about to open the world’s best, most exclusive restaurant. You’ve spent months working on the menu, you’ve hired 2 world-renowned chefs, and the restaurant’s concept is nothing short of *chef’s kiss*.  You’re convinced of two things. First, you’re about to be the owner of the #1 restaurant on the planet, and #2, you’re about to have a reservation list that has a three-month waiting period.

Let’s also imagine that this restaurant isn’t going to open in Los Angeles, New York, or Miami. Instead, you’re opening it up in a rather obscure part of the Northeast.  It’s still close to a major city, but it’s nowhere close to downtown.  The major glitch in your plan is that your restaurant doesn’t have any roads that lead to it.

Therein lies your problem. If your customers can’t find you, you’re not going to be successful.

You can think of search engine optimization (SEO) in the same way. It doesn’t matter how great your business is- if your customers can’t find you, you won’t be doing yourself any favors.

Modern problems require modern solutions

Up until the turn of the century, most people searched for businesses by pulling out their trusty Yellow Pages. If you advertised in the Yellow Pages, there was a good chance that this would be sufficient in helping you attract new business.

Today, however, nearly all people start their search for a product or service online. SEO optimization helps the search engine algorithms know when you list your business in a list of search results. The better your SEO optimization is, the better your SEO ranking will be.

For example, several weeks ago a friend of one of our employees called her to ask how she could get more online business. Did she have a website? Yes. However, after a bit of digging, our employee learned that the website was not SEO optimized—and because of this—that website never showed up in search results.  This is basically akin to opening the world’s best restaurant in the middle of the jungle.

In closing

Making sure customers can find you is a critical part of growing your business. It doesn’t matter if you have the best staff, the best product, or the best service in your industry- if your customers can’t find you, you’re likely leaving tens of thousands of dollars of revenue on the table.
