What You Need to Know About YouTube Advertising

Digital marketing trends are constantly changing. For example, if you think back to 2012, there weren’t a lot of people who were advertising on social media. Not to mention, the idea of paying someone who had a lot of followers to market a product or service (which is now referred to influencer marketing), wasn’t on anyone’s radar.

And now, just when everyone has started to become more familiar with the benefits of paid ads on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, YouTube ads have been added to the list. But is advertising on YouTube really worth it? Are people really spending lots of time searching for (and streaming) videos? The answer is a resounding yes. The stats are nothing short of impressive:

  • Statista reports that as of 2019, the platform boasted more than 2 billion (yes, that’s billion with a “b”) worldwide.
  • Datareportal found that nearly 80% of Internet users polled said they had a YouTube account—making it the second most popular social media platform on the Web.
  • Google is still the most popular search engine—but according to YouTube, their platform ranks second. YouTube has also confirmed that users watch more than 1 billion hours of video each day.
  • Thinkwithgoogle reports that as of 2019, 90% of people polled said they discovered new products and brands on YouTube.

YouTube Advertising

Businesses that advertise on YouTube have access to highly targeted ad placement. For example, you can target viewers based on their age, demographic, gender, and whether they have children. If you want to get ultra-specific (i.e. you want to target users aged 24-30, who are married, have children, and have recently moved), you can do that. You can also target more generalized groups, such as pet owners aged 20-40. It all comes down to choosing the strategy that will work best based on the product or service you’re trying to sell.

Lastly, you have numerous ad types to choose from. You can opt for display ads that appear above or to the right of featured videos, or you can opt for semi-transparent overlay ads, which appear on the bottom portion of videos in a specific category.  If you prefer, you can buy skippable (or non-skippable) video ads, which can be inserted before, during or after a main video is played.
