What You Need to Know About Keywords

Don’t Let Keyword Chaos Crumble Your SEO Cake

If your SEO ranking were a cake, your digital marketing strategies would be the ingredients you’d use to bake it. To get the best results you’ll need a well-designed website, meta-tags, back-links, and the right sprinkling of keywords.

Simply stated, keywords are words and phrases that help the search engine know what your website is about. For example, if you own a salon, your keywords may include terms and phrases such as hair styling, color corrector, balayage, and highlights.  Once you identify the keywords you want to target, you’ll also need to ensure you have the right keyword density.

Beware of keyword stuffing

In the early days of SEO, the search engine crawlers rewarded websites that used a ton of keywords, and back then, the more keywords you could get on a page, the better.  However (and as you can imagine), when you stuff as many keywords as you can into a 500-word blog post, the posts tend not to read well.

As time went on, the search engine algorithms started to penalize keyword stuffing and instead, they began to favor websites that had relevant, readable, well-written content.

How to find your keywords

Although there are numerous websites that you can use to help identify your keywords, to get the best results, you’ll want to speak with a digital marketing agency. When you partner with an online marketing firm, they can help you understand which words (and phrases) that are searched most frequently, how difficult (or easy) it is to rank for various keywords, and whether your previous keywords need to be updated.

Yes- you read that correctly.

Much like SEO isn’t a one-shot process, identifying and targeting keywords isn’t a one-shot process either.  The words and phrases that people type into a search engine when looking for a product or service tend to change over time—which means that the keywords you focused on 2 years ago may not be as relevant today. Consequently, if your website isn’t optimized based on the terms that people are using today, this could be harming your SEO ranking.
