Now let’s imagine that your restaurant is in an obscure part of the country. It’s close enough to a major city, but it’s, shall we say, “off the beaten path.” So now you have this amazing business with amazing food and second-to-none employees, but you’re missing a key component to success.

You can think of search engine optimization (SEO) as being a pathway that will help your customers find you.
In today’s fast-paced digital age, people are no longer turning to the Yellow Pages to find a service provider. They’re looking online.
If you own a pizza shop, you’ll want to make sure that when someone does a search for “pizza near me” that your listing shows up on the first page of Google. If you’re on page three (or worse, page 10), your customers won’t be able to find you.
Most people choose a business based on page-one search results; they rarely scroll past page two.
How it works
The search engines rank businesses based on an ever-changing algorithm. In years past, Google rewarded businesses who used a lot of keywords and keyword phrases in the text of their website. Today, “keyword stuffing” will ding you.
There are a number of things that search engines look for when they decide how to rank a listing. Today, this includes whether a website has been updated recently, if they have a Google+ listing, whether customers are posting reviews on the Google+ page and if a website has been able to create high-quality backlinks.
It’s all bit much to keep up with, and again, what works well today may not work tomorrow. Every time people get a sense of what the search engine crawlers are looking for, they tend to change the algorithm.
