11 Apr What you need to know about responsive website design
Responsive website design has been gaining a lot of traction in recent years- and for good reason. Simply stated, responsive web design is when a designer creates a website that “reacts” to the type of device it’s being viewed on; the design and display of the site will be altered depending on whether it’s being viewed on a smart phone, tablet or oversized computer monitor.
If you think this isn’t an important feature to consider, you’re wrong. Google gives preference to websites that are optimized for mobile. If yours isn’t easy to view on a handheld device, your website ranking is likely to suffer.
A brief history
The move toward mobile-friendly web design began shortly after the iPhone was launched.
At first, developers began by creating separate websites- one that worked well for desktop and a second that worked well for handhelds. There were a number of downsides to this approach, including but not limited to increased costs and the need to maintain separate websites. Suffice to say, that model simply wasn’t sustainable.
Fast forward to 2010, when savvy web designer Ethan Marcotte published an article proposing creating websites that would respond based on the type of device it was being viewed on, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Why it’s important
Data from the Pew Research Center found that nearly 80 percent of people in the US currently own smartphones, and that number is expected to grow in the future.
No one wants to pull up a website on their smartphone only to find they need to zoom in on text just to read it. It’s also worth noting that no one wants to need to scroll horizontally so they can finish reading a sentence.
Responsive website design not only provides an optimized browsing experience, it also helps to enhance viewers’ experience.
If your website isn’t optimized for mobile, your mobile search bounce rate is going to be high. You also run the risk of sending your customers directly into the arms of your competitors.
