Most people assume that all businesses have a Yelp page, or, depending on the type of product or service a business offers, they should likely have listings on websites such TripAdvisor, Angie’s List or Home Advisor.

No matter what type of business someone is looking for, nearly all of their searches are initiated online. Suffice to say, if your business doesn’t have any online reviews (or you can count the number of reviews you have on one hand), you’re not doing yourself any favors.

Before the Internet, if people would poll their friends, colleagues, and coworkers when they needed a referral. If they needed a plumber, they’d ask for referrals. If they were looking for a reputable car dealership? They’d ask people in their circle about their past experiences at the dealerships they’ve worked for.

If you have a Yelp page, that’s good—but you’ll want to keep it updated. For example, has your business moved? Have you expanded your product offerings? Have you updated your hours? These are all the types of things you’ll want to notate on page.

You’ll also want to make sure you’re encouraging your clients to write about their experience with you. One business owner we spoke to (who owns a dog daycare) offered his clients a free full day of play if they posted a Yelp review and included a photo of their dog. Get creative!

Did you know that online reviews can boost your SEO? They most certainly can. Let’s say you own a dry cleaning business and someone stumbles upon your Yelp page. After browsing a few of your reviews, they decide to click through to your website. The more click-throughs you get, the better that is for your SEO. It’s also worth noting that businesses who have lots of positive reviews tend to rank better than those that don’t.
